Let me tell you about a cause that I believe deserves a voice: The Children’s Book Bank. What is it? It’s a charitable organization designed to support children’s literacy by providing free books to lower income neighbourhoods. Located at 350 Berkeley Street in Toronto, The Children’s Book Bank offers both gently used and new books to the community.
The Children’s Book Bank is reminiscent of a children’s bookstore in every way. You’ll find shelves upon shelves of books for the taking, a knowledgeable staff of volunteers ready to be of assistance and quiet spaces where you can read undisturbed. It operates on the premise of one book per person per visit. And yes, parents/guardians are welcome to take their pick too.
You and I may take a trip to the local bookstore for granted. Unfortunately, for many it’s a luxury that’s simply unaffordable . This is where The Children’s Book Bank is a saving grace. It gives children, who otherwise can’t afford books, the opportunity to literally build their own libraries. It is a magical thing to witness a child find that one book they’ve been longing for.
So lend a helping hand anyway you can. Whether it be through donating or volunteering. Be part of the magic.
