What am I reading now? I Am The Messenger by Markus Zusak
For your reading pleasure, I present The Falling Raindrop by Neil Johnson and Joel Chin.
Let me begin by saying that The Falling Raindrop is one of my new favourite picture books.
The thing that immediately struck me about this book is the layers of simplicity that make this picture book one-of-a-kind. It all begins with the text that doesn’t need the pomp and circumstance of elaborate framing or unusual font. In short, it doesn’t try to be anything that its not.
Next, there’s the use of a minimalistic colour scheme. Three colours to be exact: Blue, red and yellow. These little dabs of colour pop off the page bearing the weight of the text effortlessly.
Finally is the humanization of the raindrop. The creators of this story flawlessly applied a range of emotions to a single raindrop.
The Falling Raindrop dares to challenge the norms of the traditional picture book and succeeds.
